Smazed

Smitten and in a swoon
with words, words, words
and today’s smushed letterpile: smaze,
portmanteau of smoke and haze.
Smoke, from Old English smoca.
Haze, from Old English haswa, for ashen, dusky.
At a time of deep darkness, strife and woe
words are my comfort cave, my flickering hope
the candle-holding love of my life, my muse
and me singing like Paul, maybe I’m smazed.
